Description ~ The North Icelandic Rose Mitten

These simple mittens decorated with intricate and colorful cross-stitch were especially popular in Skagafjörður, North Iceland, and in Icelandic heritage museums many beautiful examples exist.


Students will start by knitting a baby sized mitten that will be the canvas for the traditional embroidery inspired by the Icelandic Sjónabók (Ornaments and Patterns found in Iceland, 2009). The history of these mittens and many examples (pictures) will be presented during the class.


Materials Needed ~ The North Icelandic Rose Mitten

Teacher will provide materials for a small mitten and embroidery for a 10USD fee. US 3 needles for knitting a small diameter in the round, tapestry needle, sharp scissors, graph paper, pencils or pens in a few colors.
